Had Gen'l Bragg chosen to fight a second day at Perryville, what additional Confederate troops, if any, were within overnight marching distance of the battlefield? I've always wondered, after the magnificent performance of his 16,000 man contingent at Perryville, why Bragg (not one of my favorite generals) chose to retreat all the way back to Tennessee without offering a second battle to Buell.

I'd be interested in any thoughts and information regarding alternatives to Bragg's actions at and after Perryville.
