My gggrandfather served with the 11th Kentucky Inf. Co. I. His name was James Grant. On his pension application filed by his mother, Elizabeth Grant, It lists his name and Alexander Grant, Alias.

One application has James name first followed by Alexander and the next has the names just the opposite way around. Both have alias after Alexander. There is still a third application filed by Elizabeth, with just James name on it.

In all the sites I've inquired on, like regimental histories, I have yet to find James though Alexander was found.

Could someone enlighten me on the use of an alias name?
