Never mind. All this showed up in a "private bill" -- actually two of them in the 49th and 50th Congresses. His father petitioned and was denied on the basis of his desertion. This was picked up again in the 50th and a great deal of info was provided to the effect that his commanding officer was not present at his capture and thought him deserted. In fact he was captured, sent to Andersonville where he died.
