Re: CO. A 5th Kentucky @ Perryville

Jack,

There were two 5th Kentucky regiments. There was one from the mountains of Eastern Kentucky which spent the first year of its existance it was detailed with the security of the Virginia/Kentucky border region. During the Battle of Perryville this 5th KY. was in the eastern eart of the state. At Chickamauga it was brigaded with three other mountian units, the 63rd Virginia, 58th North Carolina, and the 65th Georgia under the command of Col. John H. Kelley. It became a part of the Orphan Brigade in November, 1863. I believe the 5th Kentucky you are referring to was from western Kentucky. It was redesignated the 9th Kentucky. It might behoove you to search the history of the 9th Kentucky which was also part of the Orphan Brigade. As you know the Orphan Brigade was converted to mounted Infantry after the Atlanta Campaign, thereby being spared the bloody debacle of Hood's Tennessee Campaign. They harrassed Sherman's columns on his March Through Georgia, some surrendering in North Carolina on April 26, 1865 and others becoming part of Jefferson Davis' escort on his flight.
