Re: Clay's or Jenkins Batteries

Julie,

I don't know. I came across a bit of information while researching my home area in the Civil War. A book by a local author. It is titled : A Southern Family In The Civil War by Kenneth L. Sturgill. In it he writes of the Order of Battle for the Battle of Saltville, Virginia on Oct. 2, 1864. I am including the excerpt in which he mentions the two batteries:

"Units engaged in the First Battle of Saltville were: (Union) 11th & 13th Ky; 12th Ohio; 11th Michigan; 5th & 6th U.S. Colored Cav.; the 26th, 30th, 35th, 37th, 40th & 45th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, for a total of 5,200 men.

Confederate units involved were: the 1st & 9th Ky., Johnsons Battalion, Jenkins Battery, Clays Battery, 64th Va. Reg, 10th Ky., as well as the Home Guard units under Trigg and Preston, Kent's Wythe County Guard, Robertson's Brigade and Dribrell's Brigade. Artillery was under Capt. John Barr on Church Hill and Capt. Hugh McClung's Tenn. Battery on Chestnut Ridge with four six-pounders."

I must confess that I had never heard of these two units before. Being a CW Artillery reenactor I thought I had researched the battle fairly well. However many books are written by individuals who have little knowledge of military unit designations and this writer may have meant Battalion when he wrote Battery. He may not even have known the difference. Your research however seems to have been thorough and well done. I salute you. Thank you for the help. I will delve into the Cavalry aspect more. I do have several resources that I can use.
