Re: CO. A 5th Kentucky @ Perryville

Jack:
The 5th KY CSA made it to the vicinity of Camp Dick Robinson during the battle of Perryville. According to Hiram Hawkins' history of the 5th in the KY Adj Gen'l Report, CSA, Vol I, p. 282, "Marshall's command" which included the 5th "moved on from Mount Sterling by way of Paris and Lexington and when in vicinity of Dick Robinson wsa in hearing of the artillery at Perryville."
Co. A was A.J. May's command. May had given up his commission near Mount Sterling on the move west and was not with the 5th when Perryville erupted. It's conceivable that Co. A of the 5th could have seen some action as a rear guard unit when the 5th pulled out toward Virginia, but I've never seen any record of such. The 12-month men of the 5th saw their terms expire on the return trip and Marshall cut them loose at Salyersville in mid October. That was the end of the 5th as a 12-month unit. It was soon thereafter reorganized into the regiment which ultimate saw itself become part of the Orphan Brigade.
Have a good one,
Randall Osborne
