You're right Alan. Many people today fail to understand that most Northern states had such laws against residence by black people. Kind of sheds a light on the great crusade for emancipation of slaves doesn't it? I have found that many of the African-Americans who trained at Camp Dick Robinson and Camp Nelson were actually from middle and western Tennessee. East Tennessee and western Virginia bordering Kentucky did not have a large black population.
