Just as you said, Bennett has a service file with the 8^th Kentucky Regiment as a 2^nd Lieutenant of Company "D". There is a J. D. Bennett in the same company.

Jacob Bennett later appears as Captain of Company "A", Johnson's 10^th Kentucky Cavalry.
