I am researching soldiers in the civil war with the last name of Wigginton (all spellings). One of the men, a James B. Wigginton, used an alias of Dawson Bowles when he enlisted in the 4th KY Mounted Infantry (USA).

Can anyone tell me why he might have used this alias? Was this common? Any thoughts are appreciated! Also, any info on any Wigginton's or the 4th Inf. is also appreciated.
