If his unit is Confederate then he was part of the Orphan Brigade. All regiments of the Orphan Brigade were raised as Infantry. Late in the war due to their large loss of numbers, all of the Orphan Brigade were mounted. This is why you will find some of them listed as mounted Infantry. To show you how bad their loses were, 4000 left KY in the Orphan Brigade, only 600 returned. Hope this helps.
