My GGGGrandfather served in the 11th Ky Cav. One thing I found in a work compiled of this regiment by a gentleman in Colorado, was that by Sherman's 1864 Georgia Campaign, the regiment had many members of former Confederates who had taken the oath of allegiance. They were among the group who refused to surrender with Stone at Sunshine Church lest they fall into Confederate hands. This was not all that uncommon in the West I have found.
