Re: Skirmish at Richmond, 28 JULY 1863

Thank you Ma'am. These papers are ridiculous. Run by fanatical Radical Republicans, the vast majority of every story printed were outright lies. The "large numbers of Madison County citizens" fleeing must have drastically changed their views in ten months. After the Battle of Richmond, fought on 30 AUG 1862, in one single day, between 31 AUG and 04 SEPT, in one single day, 1,000 men from Richmond and Madison County enlisted and formed the 11th Kentucky Cavalry(CSA), under Col.David W.Chenault. One more thing to consider is that the 1862 population of Madison Co. was approx. 17,300, yet they were able to raise a 1,000 man cavalry regiment in just one day! That, coupled with the fact that Madison was the second largest slave owning county in thd Commonwealth of Kentucky. These facts should be enough to convince you of which side the vast majority of the sympathy of the people was with. The other newspaper article Re:Col.Scott's handling of Federsl POWs is joke. After the Battle of Richmond, Scott's roughly 1,146 cavalrymen were responsible for over 3,000 to 3,500 US POW's and there are dozens, if not scores of accounts where those Indiana, Ohio, and even Unionist Kentuckians praised John S.Scott and his officers and men for the generosity and kindness with which they treated their prisoners up until their exchange. But thanks for the post.
