What was a 12 month Kentucky unit doing in Virginia that long? This was the 5th that Humphrey Marshall raised; it was April and most of their enlistments were up in October. Did they think that they were going to be taken farther out of state. It may be the reason that so many "deserted" around that time. Was it spring planting? I know most of the Johnson County boys in the 5th were farmers. Can you shine any light on this situation?
