Buckner Guards

I'm trying to get a handle on a dozen men who comprised the signal corps of Breckinridge's division in Sep 1862, and are listed as having come from the "Buckner Guards." Should I interpret this as referring to the pre-war volunteer unit under Buckner, the "Buckner Guard" cavalry unit, or perhaps even a generic ref to the men having being in the KSG prior to being accepted for Confederate service?

The "Report of the AG of Ky," Vol II, p. 236, lists these men as privates under Captain "George W. Bain."

In the "regular" Confederate Army Signal Corps, estab. Apr-May 1862, there was no provision for privates, other than as detailed from other units for signal duty. A Sep 1862 date for attachment to Breckinridge's division should, therefore, imply that these men were detailed from a currently existing unit, namely, the "Buckner Guards." Was there a recognized unit of that name in Sep '62, or was this a ref to their earlier, pre-Confed origins, and they were "irregularly" accepted as comprising a signal company.

Several of these men, if not all, continued on signal duty with the Army of Tennessee and were listed on the surrender rosters at Greensboro, NC, in Apr 1865. But the senior officer with which they had been associated for a time was George C. Bain of Lexington, a Lieutenant (never captain) in the Signal Corps, PACS, and Chief Sig Officer AoT to Gen Joe Johnston, raising question of the identities or confusion between "Capt." George K. and "Lt." George C., occasionally called captain in error or confusion.

Can anyone steer me back on course?
