I now see how this problem came up, the NPS Soldiers and Sailors System shows him as "A. C. S."

Unfortunately, the American CW Research Database has no record of him anywhere. Not unusual as they seem to have missed a lot of folks.

However, in my roster for the 43rd Tennessee we had a QM Sgt., an AQM Sgt., and a Regt. AQM Sgt. Clearly, here the 'A' must stand for "Assistant." We also had one each: Commissary Sgt., Ordnance Sgt. and one Color Sgt.

I have never seen a title such as "Assistant Commissary Sgt."

According to Regulations for the Army of the Confederate States, an QM Sgt. held the same pay grade as Sgt. Maj.
No subordinate Assistants are noted.

Hopefully, we can clear this up by accessing his CSR file.
