One other excellent resource for Kentuckians, primarily, is the outstanding on-line digitalization of alumni material by Centre College. Their 1890 or 1891 of an Alumni Directory gives biographical material on Centre graduates, and for those who may have been students, either at the college or in the preparatory department, the Special Collections Department has digitalized the College Catalogues from the 1840's through past 1875, which give a listing of students each year by class, with home address. If you Google "Centre College" "Special Collections", it will lead you to the resources. Excellent material primarily for Kentuckians, but many others, particularly form Tennessee, were associated with the school. I noted that the Civil War service was usually given for the men, plus what they were doing postwar.
