Where do you find John Andrew Haddix as a son of Richard Menifee Haddix? The dates work but I have no census support in my files for this connection. Thanks for any help there.

As far as a paid substitute, my grandmother's diary stated that that side of the family were poor Republicans. I do not know about his fitness for duty though. I note a later record you provided has him possibly missing an eye.
