Re: co.c 5th kentucky mntd. infantry

Shannon, Compliments

I speak to you of a Trooper named John Barker (relative of mine), who joined the 5th KY inf. (mtd) D company, mustered in, in Oct. 61.
He fought at Ivy Mountain and such toward the SE part of the State(where he had to enlist - neutrality and all) and forced by Union forces into SW Vir.
He came back through Pound Gap to fight near Somerset at "Dutton's Hill" and according to his letters "Father, I came very nearly being killed in that fight" (Dutton Hill). After that he joined up with R.S Clukes Regiment and a member of Gen. John Hunt Morgans Unit.
Campaigned with him, He was captured and paroled two times, then was finally captured at Buffington Island on the "Great Raid".
He may not of been a great cavalryman but his heart was southern. He was moved by train to Camp Chase and then to Camp Morton a POW.
The last letter I have of his starts - Dear Father, here I am again in Yankee hands (he was captured three times as mentioned).
He took his Oath to the US May, 5, 1865.
Died as a Farmer in central KY, and buried at the Confederate grave yard at Pee-Wee Valley KY. after spending several years in the old confederates home there. The home is no longer standing but the grave yard is still well kept.
I have been there and out of respect un - covered and saluted him!!!!
