In Response To: 5th/6th US Colored Troops camp ()

Both regiments were organized and trained at Camp Nelson, KY in the latter part of 1864. I recall someone requesting some type of assistance for them. (Camp followers). They had some of the men build small shacks for people to live in, but no doubt, there weren't many of these, or enough anyway.

The Emancipation Proc. issued by Pres. Lincoln stated that the camp followers & refugees would be free if they made it to a Union military base or camp, but it made no mention as to giving these people food, clothing, medical supplies, or housing of any sort. Camp Nelson wasn't as bad as some other camps at that time either. They did "try" to some extinct to shelter them. Also, IL, IN, OH, and other northern states had laws preventing these people from entering their states. Thus, many died.

I'd check the online Offical Records to see if you could find the particular order.

Hope this helps.
