William "Bill" Johnson

My 2nd Great Grandfather, William "Bill" Johnson of Owen County, Kentucky, either died or was 'murdered' between 1860 and Apr 11, 1865. Per the 1860 Census, he was 57 years old... I'm assuming that at that age, he would not have been a soldier? Did civilian murders take place in Kentucky as they did in Missouri? I ask because, as a rule, my Johnsons are a long lived people.
