Guerilla Loot

I've been researching the Magruder/Clarke/Berry gang of guerillas operating in Kentucky during 1864 and 1865. Many accounts list what was taken in robberies they committed, sometimes up into the thousands of dollars, surprising me that so much money would have been available for them to liberate at a time when Kentucky families must have been impoverished by the war. If these stories are correct, the outlaws should have been wealthy guys, yet they appear to have led hard lives, maintaining no homes and living in the open or crashing with sympathizers. Other than having some fancy uniforms tailored for themselves, I can find no reference to lavish spending by the gang. Does anyone know how they disposed of so much wealth?
