Re: Co K 5th KY Mounted Infantry

Mr.Walden,

This '5th KY Inf' that was later designated 'Mtd Inf', was this the first 5th KY, which had been raised as part of the Orphan Brigade? Or was it the 5th KY Inf that was raised/recruited up in the mountain counties of Eastern KY(under John S.Williams?), which was also the unit's chief AO? I only ask because it's easy for one to confuse the two, as I've done on a few occasions. In attempting to research some of my mother's family, I came across this problem, with Nathan Sparks serving in (if I remember right) this same Co.K, 5th KY Inf. This other 5th was composed mostly of mountain men, and operated almost exclusively in those same hills. Can you tell us if it was the original 'Orphan Brigade' 5th KY Inf which was re-designated as Mounted Infantry, or the "Mountain" 5th KY that was converted? Or both?
