Hello,

I am trying to find out more about a John R. Hamilton born c.1855 in Kentucky. His father in law was Eli Azier Sherfield who was a Confederate Calvary soldier. The Murray Ledger paper has a story by a Samuel J. Story mentioning his name.

What I'd like to know is if there is a record of a Hamilton (possibly John R. Hamilton's father) who served in the Civil war. The 1880 Calloway County census says that John R Hamilton is 25 born in Kentucky but his father is from Illinois and his mother is from Tennessee. I was wondering if maybe his father was a soldier and met his mother while serving.
I can't seem to find this family at all in the 1870 census.
