Question about underage participation in the war

I have been informed of the possibility during the Civil War one of my maternal grandfathers was a member of a group in Kentucky called "mudcats."

Apparently, the mudcats were a group of older boys/younger teens who were not of age to formally enlist in the military service. Their task was to help protect their family and home while the head of the house and the older male relatives were away at war.

Was there such an organization?

My great-great grandfather lived in the Cumberland County area of Kentucky, and I believe his affiliation was with the Union Army. He may have even drawn a pension from the government late in life.

Thank you.
