In Response To: Review of Dr. Bergeron's book ()

A couple of comments are in order. First, "Black Southerners in Gray" is not really my book. It was compiled and edited by Richard Rollins. I have but one essay in the book and do not understand how Amazon and others have decided to list it under my name.

The negative review is, unfortunately, far too typical of the attitude of a small minority of people in this country who simply will not accept any evidence that blacks supported or fought for the Confederacy. This review in particular trots out some familiar arguments that I failed to prove that any black men served in Louisiana units and states that the only man for whom there is the strongest evidence pretended he was white. The latter twists what I wrote. All of this man's comrades knew that he was a free man of color when he enlisted. After all, they were his neighbors.
