Hayes, as you are well aware, the "critics" say that cooks, servants, teamsters, &c., do not count as black Confederates. Only musket-toting men can be so classified. And because the cooks, servants, teamsters, &c., were not serving voluntarily, their efforts cannot be considered as supporting the Confederate war effort. If a man is thought to have pretended to be white, that cancels his membership as a black Confederate. I could go on, but you are familiar with the arguments.
