Odd service record entry.

What does this mean: “Absent at Alexandria, La., representing Confederate States in sundry suits of habeas corpus." Does this mean that he was acting as an attorney, representing the CSA, in cases of habeas corpus brought in Louisiana State court?

This entry is found in the records of John M. Bonner, 1st Lt., 16th Louisiana Battalion Infantry.
