Actually, I am embarrassed to say that I might have been a bit hasty in my initial response. Come to think of it, I did apply for a $70,000 federal grant (Land and Water Conservation Fund) for my project, and I was told that we did get the money. I never saw it, but supposedly it went to the Office of State Parks after our fort was turned over to them. And I was recently informed of another available ABPP (American Battlefield Protection Program) grant that is available. So, apparently there is federal money out there. Good luck getting it.
But I stand by my position that without a strong local effort, nothing is going to happen. Although they may give moral support, neither the feds nor the state are going to take any kind of leadership role in fixing up a Civil War site. But it is definitely a job worth doing. Good luck to you.
