Thanks again, Terry. I have found the website roster for the 3rd LA Rgt. ("Wingfield's") to be a helpful starting point, too. Half the men in Cos. A and C seem to be relatives: Bickham, Ellzey, Alford, Brumfield, Shilling, Morris, Stogner, Simmons, Varnado, Magee, Bateman, Pigott, Fortenberry. Sounds like the whole region of Louisiana enlisted at once. So many signed up July 14, 1862!

Thanks for the link and the helpful advice. I have searched Soldiers and Sailors to good effect, and just stumbled on the Louisiana State Archives (Pension Data Index) that also have given me leads. I have 200 Simmons, 100 Fortenberrys, dozens of Brumfields and even more Alfords still to find. The problem is, so many of them had the same first names. I have 13 James Simmons and 8 William Brumfields to sort out. lol
