Union and Sabine Rifles
In Response To: Re: Sabine Rifles ()

One statement in this message is only partially correct. Company A, 6th Louisiana Infantry Regiment was composed of men from both Sabine and Union Parish, and this unit was known as the "Union and Sabine Rifles" (not just the 'Sabine Rifles'). I think about half of the men were from Union, half from Sabine. The first captain of the 'Union and Sabine Rifles' was Arthur McArthur, a Union Parish resident; he was later promoted to major but was killed two weeks later. Their second captain was Allan M. Callaway, formerly the sheriff of Union Parish; he was killed at the Battle of Sharpsburg.

Michael, according to Dr. Bergeron's book, Co. B, 17th Louisiana Regiment was the 'Sabine Rifles'. Was this a misprint in his book perhaps?

Does anyone know anything further about the 'Union and Sabine Rifles'?
