Re: Springfield Landing, Port Hudson LA....

My great-grandfather was Capt AJ Hersey,16th New Hampshire, and luckily for me survived the attack on Springfield Landing!(He was shot in the ankle, and limped the rest of his life)Apparently the 32 men from the 16th were the only ones to put up anything resembling a defense!! So you can see why I am interested about any and all info regarding Springfield Landing.

The one person "missing" from the 16th was listed in another report(from the 16th's records) as having been shot and falling into the river. When they found the body,he was listed as having drowned, instead of KIA...go figure!

So the 162nd NY's pickets didn't do their job,and after the fact were replaced. The 2nd Rhode Island's reply for the Fed investigation to why they weren't on the job went something like "We weren't supposed to be there, were we?" (The 2nd RI was later courtmartialed and disbanded for other misdeeds). It is a wonder that anything was left at the Landing!!

So as I said earlier,I am interested in hearing about any and all details about the attack on Springfield Landing and thank all of you for taking the time to post.
