Since he lived until 1906, I wonder if he applied for a Confederate pension, and, if so, what he might have said about his Union service (nothing I suspect). There are a few cases of men serving first in the Confederate army and then joining the Louisiana Scouts or some other Union unit. It is difficult to speculate on their motivation, but one thing that probably should not be discounted is that their allegience to the Confederacy may have been very shallow. The Scouts were basically Jayhawkers who had opposed the Confederate war effort for various reasons before joining the Union army. Many of them did not remain in Union service for very long.
