Jim, you are correct in a legion consisting of infantry, artillery, and cavalry. It was thought such a unit would better integrate the various components on the battlefield. But there were too little of each to be effective, so legions generally were quickly broken up. The Hampton Legion did fight as a unit at First Manassas but afterward the artillery and cavalry were reassigned. The remaining infantry continued to go by the name Hampton Legion. Late in the war, they were converted to mounted infantry and served with a cavalry brigade. Cobb's Legion was another one, but it's artillery and cavarly components were quickly scattered and it never fought as a united unit.
