At the time of the fight at Henderson's Hill, the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry was the only experienced cavalry unit that Taylor had available. The 4th Louisiana Cavalry (later renumbered the 7th) had recently been organized and was not trained or disciplined well enough to handle the important scouting and picketing responsibilities. Vincent appears to have been a poor commander, but he had fairly competent subordinates. Besides criticism by Taylor, Vincent also caught it from Lt. Col. Louis A. Bringier of the 4th/7th Cav.
Bringier's letters in the LSU Archives give some minor details of the foray into South Louisiana against the Jayhawkers after the Battle of Mansfield.
