Taylor's Mounted Troops
In Response To: Re: From Felix Poche's Diary: ()

On March 19, 1864, two days before Henderson Hill, Taylor says his entire force of mounted troops was 500 west of the Red (with him) and 500 east (with Liddel). He also made a mention of about March 15th that Walker's scouts, 3 mounted companies, had been cut off by A.J. Smith's sudden appearance near Ft DeRussy, but that they soon rejoined Walker. On the 19th he says that Vincent joined him, and the infantry and that he placed them at James' Store, etc... is that ADDITIONAL to the 500 horse, or did Vincent have the 500 horse? I am not clear on that point.

Never thought of this before, and Taylor makes no mention of it, but, Green had campaigned with Taylor in 1863 in south Louisiana, but then beginning on March 30, 1864, Taylor starts documenting Green's troopers joining him from Texas piecemeal. So, I suppose all of the Texas cavalry/horse had returned across the Sabine River over the winter of '63/'64.

Henderson's Hill, if the timber were to be removed today, as it was in 1864, affords one a good view of the valley below and the road from Alexandria. Bayou Jean de Jean cuts around the hill and acts as a natural moat too. Good troops could have held that ground against a superior force for some time.
