Re: Federal Foces in LA in 1864

Pontonier units were usually assigned to an army's headquarters or engineers. The Union army had a garrison in Alexandria from the end of the war through the early years of Reconstruction. It was there to preserve order and had nothing to do with military actions after June 1865.
