Re: Venable's Battery
In Response To: Venable's Battery ()

My memory isn't as bad as I feared. Major Richard Morton Venable was assigned to command of the Siege Train Battalion at Alexandria in December 1864. The battalion had been organized the previous month and consisted of five batteries stationed in the Alexandria defenses (primarily at Fort Buhlow and Fort Randolph). Company D was what was left of the 8th Louisiana Heavy Artillery Battalion, which had been captured at Vicksburg. Captain Thomas N. McCrory commanded the company. Colonel Houston King replaced Venable in March 1865, but some of the men apparently still referred to the unit at Venable's Battalion.
