research 31st La Inf.

I am interested in any information beyond the "Offfical Records" collection regarding the 31st Louisiana Infantry, particularly from the period of their enlistment in 1862 thru the Vicksburg Campaign, but also any record of it continuing to function as a unit later. I have seen reference to a unit with that designation still in the field when Taylor surrendered in '65.

The unit seemed to have been raised mostly from N. Louisiana. At the time of Vicksburg, Lt Col S. H. Griffin was in command and the regiment formed part of Brig. Gen. W.E. Baldwin's Brigade, which in turn was part of Maj. Gen. Martin Luther Smith's Division. They fought at Chickasaw Bluff, Port Gibson, Black River and the siege of Vicksburg. Some units were in skirmishes prior to leaving Louisiana.

My ancestors,James J. Duke and S. J. Meadows both served in that regiment.

Thanks for any info or pointers for further research.
