Olive Branch, LA in 1863

I am still trying to narrow down where my grandmother’s uncle E. C. Malone of the 11th and 17th AR Infantry died (his parents never knew so I am not sure what my chances actually are). His papers state that he was “absent, sick at hospital” in April 1863. Mike Fraering at Port Hudson has been very helpful and finds no records of E. C. Malone at Port Hudson. However, in reading Anthony Rushing’s Ranks of Honor, I see that the consolidation of the 11th and 17th occurred on March 31, 1863. I’m assuming that if E. C. Malone’s records are from this unit, then he was still alive when it was consolidated (he had also been in the 11th). It appears also (from Ranks of Honor) that the 11th and 17th was at Olive Branch, LA in May of 1863. Somewhere between Port Hudson and Olive Branch, E. C. Malone probably was hospitalized. I understand there were several hospitals in Clinton, which does not appear to be that far from Olive Branch. If he was “absent, sick in hospital,” was this most likely an actual hospital, a field hospital, or even a private home? Are all of these possibilities? Any opinions will be appreciated! I am also posting this on the Arkansas board.
