In Response To: Sumter Guards ()

Jim, the Sumter Guards were formed in New Orleans and two-thirds of its members were foreign born. It was the only company in the 8th La. that had a majority of foreign born men. At First Manassas, the regiment was held in reserve and did not see combat. For more info, check out my book "Lee's Tigers" and Art Bergeron's book "Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units." Where did you find the muster roll? Tulane University's Special Collections also have a regimental roll that was updated toward the end of the war. Terry
