Re: Sabine Rifles

Mark :

I agree with you. Co. B., 17th LA Infantry was known as the
"Sabine Rebels."

Co. A, 6th LA Infantry was known as the "Union and Sabine
Rifles." See James P. Gannon's book : "Irish Rebels, Con-
federate Tigers."

I have 2 GG-GFs ( Salter & Gandy ) who were in the Sabine
Rebels. David Bray md. GG-GF D. P. Gandy's sister.

Capt. Ludlow J. Nash was a brother to Christopher C. Nash
( Co. A, 6th LA ).

From my research, I believe that Co. B, 17th LA originally
went to the service as Co. J of the "Jeff Davis Regiment."
They appear to have been reorganized fairly quickly and ab-
sorbed into the 17th LA.

Capt. Arthur McArthur of Co. A, 6th LA Infantry was from
Sabine Parish, and not Union Par., as stated in Andrew
Booth's book. He was originally from Limington, Maine.
He was killed at the first battle of Winchester & is buried there. His brother was Wm. Miltimore McArthur, who
was Col. ( later gen. ) of the 8th Maine Infantry.
