I am a total novice at this research. My great-grandfather,Thomas Scanlon was an Irish immigrant to New Orleans in the 1840's. Wonder how to find out if he was in the Confederate Army? Are there rolls of all the soldiers in different outfits? What would likely be a group he would have been with if he was in the army? Are there records of those who were killed? Where would be the best place for me to find out such information?
