Re: Colonel Jesse Williams - 2nd LA

Hi Dorsey:

A quick Internet check for "Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery" turned up:

(1) http://home.att.net/~hallowed-ground/spotscemetery.htm

(2) http://www.nps.gov/frsp/rebcem.htm

(3) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~helmsnc/FredCWCEM/fred-w.html

I would get in touch with the National Parks Service Staff at Fredericksburg (they handle Spotsylvania battlefield as well) and see if they have any information on Colonel Williams.

Given the circumstances surrounding his death, I imagine he was buried near where he fell, or in a nearby church yard. It is possible that his remains were removed later to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.

However, Wayne Cosby's database of Louisiana Confederate dead shows Colonel Jesse Milton WILLIAMS (b. 11 JUN 1831, d. 12 MAY 1864) buried in the Stonewall Cemetery, Frederick County, Winchester, Virginia. This is a far distance from Spotsylvania Court House unless someone removed his body from the battlefield after the war. http://www.lascv.org/w.htm

Colonel Williams was from DeSoto Parish. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ladesoto/index.htm But I did not find anything more on the genealogy website there than what appears in Booth's "Records" about his military service.

I thumbed through my copy of Bartlett's "Military Record of Louisiana" (LSU Press, 1964) without finding mention of his burial site.

If you contact the NPS people in Fredericksburg, give us a posting of what you learn!
