General Trudeau

Mike:

I found several New Orleans newspaper articles from the spring of 1862 that indicate that General Trudeau had volunteered for Confederate service in the fall of 1861 and was commander of the artillery at Columbus, Kentucky under Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk. Trudeau had been promoted to brigadier general to command the Louisiana Legion in July 1861. My wife's family member, J. Numa Augustin, was Colonel of the Orleans Guard Regiment and commanded the Legion in Trudeau's absence until the occupation of New Orleans at the end of April 1862.

I think the Louisiana state militia effectively disappeared with the implementation of the Confederate Conscription Act passed April 16, 1862 and the Confederate Partisan Ranger Act a month or so later. There were some State Guard battalions formed in 1863, but these got transferred into the Confederate Trans-Mississippi Department organization in February 1864. Dr. Art Bergeron has documented most of this in his "Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units 1861-1865" (LSU Press, 1989).
