Gen. Hugh Dunlap of Madison Parish, LA, did indeed serve in the US military; however, his service was during the Mexican War. He organized and outfitted his own military unit to serve in the War. One of my ancestors, Charles B. McKiernan, served with him. He was also Dunlap's brother-in-law. McKiernan's sister Susanna married General Dunlap.
