Age of Enlistment

If and individual was 14 years old would he have been old enough to serve in the Confederate Army? I have been told the answer is no. The absolute cut off was 16. As a matter of fact, I was told it was illegal to enlist young.
Was a drummer boy or an aide considered to be an enlisted man? What about those who had good educations and could read, write, and spell-As clerks. I have noticed that some individuals started off as Clerks in Artillery Units. It is easy to imagine a clerk might be an entry position in a unit on the way to being an officer, whether this is true I don't know.
