Valery Sulakowski, the first Colonel of that regiment, resigned his command after getting a look at the politics of the military organization around Richmond, Virginia, and came over to be Chief Engineer in Texas. He was really a key player in some of the Confederate victories over in Texas. There is a good article about his Louisiana experiences by Francis C. Kajencki called "The Louisiana Tiger," which was published in Louisiana History 15, no. 1 (Winter 1974): 51.
