My book "More Generals in Gray" (LSU Press) has a bio article on Gaspard Tochman, an old Polish revolutionary who helped raise the "Polish Brigade" in New Orleans. I agree that very few actual Poles were in the 14th (or 15th) LA, though the 14th had a lot of "ethnic" Americans. It appears the Sec. of War promised Tochman a brigadier generalship if he raised a brigade, but later reneged on the promise.
