Re: Record of deaths at Confed. Hosp. Monroe, LA?

Debra,

The only record of the Monroe Hospital that I have seen comes from this work:

Dr. E. Russ Williams, Jr.
"Encyclopedia of Individuals and Founding Families of Louisiana From 1785 to 1850" Part Two, L - O, 1997, pp. 420 - 423.

These pages give what information Dr. Williams knows about the hospital, which comes from order books, diaries, military records, etc. He states that the precise location of the Monroe Hospital is unknown, and the bulk of what is known comes from a collection at Tulane University Library. I wish I knew if those records survived Hurricane Katrina's devastation, but so far I have not heard.

There is no known record book that gives the names or any information on all soldiers who died at the Monroe Hospital. Dr. Williams states that many of the soldiers who died at the Monroe Hospital were buried in the northeast corner of the Old Monroe City Cemetery.

Here is a little more information on the Monroe Hospital from his work:

At various times in 1862 and 1863, there were so many patients that the main hospital was full, and the sick were placed in Union Church, the Male Academy, and Endom's Carriage Shop, places without stoves. The Confederate and Louisiana governments helped to supply the hospital, as did the Ouachita Parish Police Jury. In 1863, people went as far north as Spearsville in Union Parish, collecting food and supplies for the soldiers who were patients in the hospital. In mid-1863, six buildings served as hospitals. Due to Yankee raids on Monroe in late August 1863, the Confederate staff of the Monroe Hospital abandoned Monroe and moved northwest to Vienna (just north of Ruston); they re-established the Confederate Hospital at Vernon by September 1863, and it reportedly remained functional until the end of the war.
