Why did they burn the records? General principals? There were roumers of Confederate assets being shipped south into Texas. I can't imagine much worth shipping, but Union forces seem to have believed it in the summer of '65. There were Confederate secret service activities at Shreveport of which records including payrolls and reports would certainly have been destroyed. This sort of implies that research for records would probably be more fruitful in the areas where reports and records would have been written. A lot of the Shreveport materials would have been copies sent in on a regular schedule (monthly?). I get the impression that the Texas archives are more intact than for the rest of the Trans-Mississippi. It also seems as though a lot of the bits and pieces show up in the documentation filed when applying for Confederate state pensions.
